This week I had the honor of learning more about a new Non profit organization still in its early stages yet has been successful beyond words; this charity is called Project Akhirah. A very close friend and sister of mine, Amina Farah, first reached out to me to discuss Project Akhirah and her volunteer work with this incredible organization. Project Akhirah is very new and thriving and looking to get the word out of what their organization wishes to accomplish. I decided why not write a blog! I’m always looking for reasons to sit back and type away.
Project Akhirah is a Non profit organization set up in 2013 by a group of young Muslimahs’ in hopes of making a difference in the lives of the less fortunate, those whose lives are laden with poverty and suffering.
Project Akhirah has played an active role in the community by volunteering for different organizations. One of their many volunteer works which captured my heart took place just recently (Dec. 23rd 2013). A group of young Muslimahs’ from Project Akhirah graciously joined in with “A Gift From Muslim Aid” which originally began in Oct 2013. The girls visited Heartland’s Hospital where they held a toy drive, distributing toys to all the children in the Emergency Department for Children. I think it was an excellent idea...bringing lots of smiles of joy to these poor children who are dealing with horrible illnesses....I’m sure it was a welcoming aura of happiness to these angels and their families.
“Spoken Silence” is another one of the many events Project Akhirah organised back in November 2013. The event was centred on having a voice for those being oppressed, tortured, and killed in Syria. The two day event helped raise funds for Muslim Aid’s Syria Appeal in a whopping total of £15,000!!!!! Excellent isn’t it??!! They had a variety of workshops such as hijab styling workshops hosted by none other than the infamous Nabila Bee and Habiba De Silva (Life Long Percussion), stalls, and activities available at the event. Also the talented and gifted Aminah Saleh led a poetry workshop as well as performances by Usama Mohammed, Tim Victor, and many more. Members of Project Akhirah were also able to bring in special speakers to discuss how the crisis in Syria has personally affected them. A promo of the “Spoken Silence” with footage of the workshops, performances, and speakers is available on you tube.

However each of the girls were personally affected by the crisis in Syria in particular and felt it a responsibility to help towards this cause. As a group they had made pledges to raise enough funds to donate to the Islamic Help’s Syria Appeal. They raised money by joining ranks and organizing a huge fundraising event, “Spoken Silence,” in Birmingham which proved to be very successful. In addition, Project Akhirah also have a justiving.com site where they have alone raised £5000 k and this is not an up to date figure so imagine just how high it is now!

The words of one of the speakers at this great event, Rebecca Kibria, were especially endearing. She beautifully yet eloquently discussed the events of the Syrian crisis in an Islamic sense.

Sister Rebecca gave an emotional image of the moments before the deaths of Syrian people. She gave us a visual understanding of the heartache that the Syrian people go through each day of every hour of every minute of every second. Rape, torture, and death is constantly at the doors of the Syrian people, and if we don’t help them than who will? As humans we have a moral duty to help our fellow brothers and sisters. Regardless of race or religion, we share the bond of humanity and what is greater than this? A lot of us have become so engrossed in this world, always wondering how to increase our bank balances, keeping up the with the latest fashion trends, earning enough money so we can vacation on the islands of Bahamas and Tahiti, but what about the Syrian people...... when will they be able to have clothes on their backs, food in their tummies, and the security of knowing that their families will live till the next day and the honor of their women will not be violated?????
Organizations like Project Akhirah are taking a stand against the atrocities of the Bashar Al Assad regime by helping their people. These young Muslimahs' have achieved what other middle aged men and women in political positions have decided to wash their hands of and turn their backs on.

It’s definitely comforting to know that the next generation will not stand back and turn away from those who are in need. The members of Project of Akhirah have achieved so much and may they achieve more and be blessed bountifully!
